Last December, I had the opportunity to attend a leadership dinner with Walsh President Stephanie W. Bergeron and other faculty members. Over dinner discussion I was asked what I would like to see more of at Walsh College, to which I responded student life. During my attendance I strived to be more involved, though I was not fully aware of everything that Walsh had to offer. I felt that prior to attending Walsh, at Marine City High School, Northwood University, and St. Clair County Community College my resume seemed more impressive in the aspect of donating my time to help others. That’s when Stephanie Bergeron had Duc Abrahamson jump in.

As all of us students know, one of the many reasons we chose Walsh was because it provides a convenient way to gain a business degree since the luxury of putting our career on hold while attending school isn’t a viable option for many unique reasons. As a result of the array of busy schedules and the fact that students do not live on campus, most who attend do not have a lot of time to donate for extra-curricular activities. Walsh College has always been non-traditional because majority of Walsh students are working while attending school. It was brought to my attention that I am in the slim margin of students that had time to donate, so I was encouraged to request the white mail / emails, and follow Walsh on social media sites, etc. so I could become more familiar with the Student Organizations:

• Accounting and Tax Student Organization (ATSO)
• Delta Mu Delta (DMD)
• Finance and Economics Club (FEC)
• International Student Organization (ISO)
• Investment Club (WCIC)
• MBA Association (WCMA)
• Open Source Community
• Student Government Association (SGA)
• Student Veterans Organization (WCSVO)

I am blessed that I was recognized as the youngest Walsh College graduate so I had the opportunity to attend this networking event. It was eye-opening that the faculty puts the students’ needs to heart and advised me to set up appointments with career services and had encouraged me to attend other networking events: Oktoberfest, Casino Night, the Wine Gala, Job Club, Career Fair, Welcome Week, Trailblazers in Business, etc.

A couple weeks later, while sitting in the pews at the Zion Christian Church during the college’s 100th commencement ceremony upon Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne’s speech, he had mentioned that in order to create the meaning of the tomorrow that you want to create a better society; i.e. Walsh College offers a wide-range of networking opportunities so students, faculty, and alumni can build relationships with one another and become a resource for others. Following the ceremony, I had ran into Duc (passing out stickers in the hallway and advising me to get my picture taken with the Walsh College Yellow Suits) and she had informed me that one of her contacts would be emailing me information on how to become a Walsh College Ambassador; so now as an alumni I receive invitations to events in the metro-Detroit area; such as parades, tutoring, media events and radio campaigns, etc. It's time I return the favor by encouraging students to contact Duc Abrahamson in the Alumni and Student Relations office or at dabrah2@walshcollege.edu with any questions about student life; plus she usually has goodies!
